In short: Before the first Kingdom Hearts, three apprentices were forged in fire and darkness. This 2010 prequel explores how a quest to save the worlds tore apart a trio of friends, introducing a complex web of parallel narratives that define the series' deep mythology.

Developed by Square Enix starting in June 2005, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep serves as 'Episode 0' of the franchise. It takes place ten years before the original game and follows three Keyblade apprentices: Terra, Aqua, and Ventus. While they begin their journey together under Master Eraqus to find the missing Master Xehanort, their paths diverge based on their unique traits—Terra’s physical power, Ventus’s speed, and Aqua’s magic. The narrative is structured into three parallel scenarios that intersect at pivotal moments, culminating in a final chapter only accessible after completing all three.

The game introduces the Unversed, 'fledgling emotions' that feed on negativity, as well as the Command System for combat. Unlike previous entries using Magic Points, this title utilizes a Focus gauge for 'Shotlock' attacks and a Dimension Link (D-Link) system to draw power from companions like Experiment 626. These mechanics allow for high customization through a 'Command Deck,' where players can swap techniques and abilities at will, reflecting the diverse roles of the three protagonists.

The story is defined by a tragic schism. After Terra fails his mastery exam due to his inner darkness, he is manipulated by Xehanort into seeking power from that very shadow. Meanwhile, Ventus is influenced by Vanitas—a being created from the darkness extracted from Ventus's own heart. The narrative explores themes of manipulation and sacrifice as the trio is forced into roles of espionage, rebellion, and survival, eventually leading to a confrontation at the Land of Departure where Master Eraqus falls.

Beyond its core story, the game integrates various Disney worlds like Neverland and Olympus Coliseum, alongside Square Enix locations like Radiant Garden. It also features notable cameos, including Zack Fair from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, chosen specifically because he serves as a prequel protagonist to his own series.
