In short: In the world of Kingdom Hearts, existence is often a matter of memory. This 2009 title explores a devastating reality: a character created as a fail-safe to duplicate a hero's power, only to discover her own artificial nature and the heavy price of her existence.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days serves as a pivotal narrative bridge, taking place concurrently with the first game and Chain of Memories. It shifts the perspective to Roxas, the 'Nobody' of the series' protagonist, Sora. While Roxas was born when Sora's body vanished, the game introduces Xion, a girl who initially befriends Roxas and his mentor, Axel. Their bond is forged through shared isolation within Organization XIII, a group of powerful entities seeking to become complete beings by creating 'Kingdom Hearts.'

The narrative takes a dark turn as Xion discovers her true nature. She is revealed to be a 'Replica'—an artificial human constructed from Sora's memories. Her purpose was to act as a fail-safe to duplicate Roxas's powers, but in doing so, she inadvertently began absorbing Sora's memories, preventing their full restoration. This existential crisis forces Xion to choose between her friendship with Roxas and her role in the larger cosmic struggle. Ultimately, she chooses to return to Sora, leading to a confrontation where she is defeated, causing her memories and her very existence to vanish.

Technically, the game was a landmark for the Nintendo DS, pushing the hardware to deliver graphics that some critics claimed were unprecedented for the system. To accommodate the DS's limited buttons, developers opted for a 'panel system' for character customization and avoided mandatory stylus use. The title's name, which remained unexplained during promotion, eventually revealed itself as a reference to the 358 days Roxas and Xion spent as members of the Organization.
