The 1973 expedition that reimagined a cinematic icon
In short: Before it became a shared universe with Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island was a collaborative effort to strip away 'Beauty and the Beast' tropes. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the film sought to transform a classic monster into a complex, lonely god.
Released on March 10, 2017, Kong: Skull Island serves as a reboot of the King Kong franchise and a pivotal entry in the Legendary Monsterverse. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the film follows a 1973 expedition to an uncharted Pacific island. Under the guidance of Monarch's Bill Randa, a US Army group, under Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard's leadership and featuring tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), was formed.
The film's development was a complex, multi-studio evolution. Originally announced at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con as a Universal Pictures project, it eventually moved to Warner Bros. to facilitate a crossover universe. The screenplay underwent significant shifts; writer Max Borenstein initially explored settings ranging from the Vietnam War to 1/17 WWI, even considering a plot involving a 'Titan Serum.' Ultimately, the production adopted a paradigm inspired by 'Apocalypse Now,' focusing on a group of misfits navigating a misunderstood force.
Visually, the creature design sought a balance between modern technology and 1933 nostalgia. Using motion-capture facial expressions and keyframe animation, the team aimed to make the 104-foot-tall Kong feel both iconic and emotionally heavy—a 'lonely god.' The creature's ecosystem was also influenced by the spirit-driven domains seen in Hayao Miyazaki’s 'Princess Mononoke,' aiming for a world that felt simultaneously beautiful and horrifying.
Despite a $185 million budget, the film was a commercial success, grossing $570 million. A 90th Academy Awards nod for Best Visual Effects highlighted the film's impressive technical prowess.
