In short: When Lee Geum-ja was released from prison, the world saw a reformed, saintly woman. But her kindness was a carefully constructed mask, designed to facilitate a brutal, long-planned retribution against the man who destroyed her life.

In Park Chan-wuk's 2005 neo-noir thriller, *Lady Vengeance* (also known as *Sympathy for Lady Vengeance*), the protagonist Lee Geum-ja emerges from incarceration with a singular mission. Thirteen years prior, Geum-ja had been convicted of kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old boy named Won-mo. Her confession was so willing and her appearance so innocent that she became a national sensation. However, the truth was far more sinister: Geum-ja was framed by Mr. Baek, a teacher who murdered the child and threatened Geum-ja's infant daughter to ensure her silence.

The film's narrative explores the heavy cost of vengeance. Geum-ja's 'reformed' persona in prison was actually a strategic tool used to secure favors, weapons, and allies among other paroled inmates. Her revenge is not a solitary act; it culminates in a collective execution. After discovering that Mr. Baek had murdered multiple children by faking ransom calls, Geum-ja, a detective, and the relatives of the victims unite to torture and kill him, eventually taking a group photo to ensure mutual complicity.

Visually, the film employs a striking technique in its 'Fade to Black and White' version. The cinematography begins with vibrant primary colors and transitions into muted pastels, blacks, and whites. This shift is mirrored in Geum-ja's characterization, moving from a blue coat to a black leather one. The film's baroque-themed score, featuring works by Vivaldi and Paganini, underscores the tragic, operatic nature of her journey, which concludes with a poignant, fractured attempt at atonement.
