How a micro-budget British period drama subverted the classic Lady Macbeth narrative arc.
In short: Moving from 19th-century Russia to rural England, this 2016 debut feature strips away the lavish tropes of the period drama. By focusing on a single estate and a ruthless protagonist, the film transforms a classic literary tragedy into a chilling, minimalist study of power, class, and cold-blooded survival.
Directed by William Oldroyd and written by Alice Birch, the 2016 film Lady Macbeth reimagines Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella. Produced on a micro-budget of between US$440,000 and US$650,000, the production team opted for a minimalist aesthetic. Filmed in September and October 2015 at Lambton Castle, the movie relies on natural light, static frames, and a sparse soundscape to emphasize the isolation of the Lester estate in Northumberland.
The screenplay makes a radical departure from the source material by eliminating the novella's final act, which followed the characters into penal exile. Instead, Birch focuses on the crimes committed within the house. While the original story sees the protagonist confess to remain with her lover, the film’s Katherine Lester chooses to protect her status among the landed gentry. She successfully frames her lover, Sebastian, and her maid, Anna, for the murders of her husband, father-in-law, and a young ward, ending the film as the sole, unchallenged mistress of the estate.
Oldroyd and casting director Shaheen Baig utilized colour-blind casting to challenge the traditional all-white portrayal of 19th-century Britain. By casting actors of colour in key roles—including Naomi Ackie, Cosmo Jarvis, Golda Rosheuvel, and Anton Palmer—the film integrates race into the novella’s existing themes of gender and class. This approach was intentional, as Oldroyd’s research indicated that the region was historically more diverse than typical period dramas suggest.
The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and earned critical acclaim, including multiple wins at the 2017 British Independent Film Awards. Despite its modest production scale, it has grossed US$6.4 million worldwide. By constraining the narrative to a single location and a few characters, the filmmakers directed their energy toward a stark, expressionist exploration of human ambition and moral decay.
