From Australian TV stardom to rescuing the Queen's Range Rover
In short: Before she was a fixture of British television, Liza Goddard was a breakout star in Australia. Known for her role in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, her versatile career spans Shakespearean drama, cult sci-fi, and even a real-life rescue mission involving the British monarchy.
Liza Goddard's career is defined by its remarkable geographical and genre-spanning breadth. Born in Smethwick in 1950, she moved to Sydney in April 1965 when her father, David Goddard, was appointed Head of Drama at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This move facilitated her early television career in Australia, where she performed in Shakespearean productions like 'Romeo and Juliet' and appeared in the iconic series Skippy the Bush Kangaroo between 1968 and 1970.
Upon returning to the UK, Goddard transitioned into a prolific character actress. Her breakthrough came in the 1972–76 series 'The Brothers,' where she starred alongside her first husband, actor Colin Baker. Her versatility allowed her to move seamlessly between sitcoms like 'Watch This Space' and 'Pig in the Middle,' and science fiction, notably playing a space pirate in the 1983 Doctor Who story 'Terminus.'
Beyond the screen, Goddard has maintained a high public profile. In 1984, she was the subject of 'This Is Your Life' at the Ambassador's Theatre. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she became a household name in a different capacity as the female team leader on the long-running quiz show 'Give Us A Clue.' Her resilience is also noted; she recovered from breast cancer in 1997 and continues to support charities like the RSPCA.
Her life has been marked by notable connections, including a marriage to pop star Alvin Stardust and a 1994 incident where she helped rescue Queen Elizabeth II's Range Rover and horse box after they became stuck in the mud near Holkham.
