Inside the lavish, high-stakes world of Delhi's wedding planners
In short: Set against the backdrop of India's expensive, extravagant weddings, Made in Heaven explores the friction between tradition and modern life. This romantic drama follows two planners navigating a society where conservative mindsets and modern aspirations are constantly at loggerheads, revealing the complex human nature beneath the celebration.
Created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, the series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 8 March 2019. It follows Tara and Karan, two professionals running a Delhi-based wedding planning agency. The show has been praised by critics for its dark take on the 'Big Fat Indian Wedding' and its exploration of social dynamics in Delhi. The production features a diverse ensemble cast, including Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur. Other notable performers include Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora, and Kalki Koechlin. The series also stars Shivani Raghuvanshi and Mona Singh. This ensemble brings life to the agency's hectic operations.
The narrative structure uses lavish weddings as a setting to examine the tension between traditional values and contemporary aspirations in present-day India. This duality is central to the series, which has received positive critical reception, including a four-star review from Soumya Srivastava of Hindustan Times, who called it Amazon Prime's best desi original. Sagar Desai, Dub Sharma, Balkrishan Sharma, and Sherry Mathews wrote the musical score. Various artists, such as Rituraj and Farad Bhiwandiwala, provide the vocal performances. Specific tracks like 'Jiya Jaye' feature lyrics by Amanda Sodhi. This auditory layer enhances the show's vibrant atmosphere.
The production faced delays when work on the second season, originally slated for April 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, filming eventually wrapped in April 2022, leading to the second season's release on 10 August 2023. The series is noted for its strong character development and acclaimed costume design. The first season consists of nine episodes directed by several filmmakers, including Nitya Mehra and Prashant Nair. Alankrita Shrivastava also contributed to the writing process. The show's visual identity is further enriched by highly acclaimed costume design.
