The university that rose from a tragic 1970 plane crash
In short: On November 14, 1970, the Thundering Herd football team was returning home after a loss when their chartered flight crashed. The tragedy killed all 75 people on board, including 37 players and five coaches. Today, Marshall University stands as a testament to resilience, honoring those lost through unique campus traditions.
The crash occurred as Southern Airways Flight 932 approached Tri-State Airport after the team played in North Carolina. While 75 people perished, thirteen players and members of the freshman team were not on board because they were ineligible for varsity play under NCAA rules at the time. The following season, the team was rebranded as the "Young Thundering Herd," composed of remaining injured players, freshmen granted a special waiver by the NCAA, and athletes from other sports programs.
The university has integrated this tragedy into its physical and cultural identity. To honour those lost, the campus features a plaza and fountain where water stays motionless between November 14 and the initial spring football drill annually. In 2023, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice signed legislation making November 14 an official state Memorial Day to honor the victims.
Beyond its history of resilience, Marshall has evolved into a major research hub. Founded in 1837 as a private subscription school, it transitioned through various identities—including a teacher training facility and a "State Normal School"—before achieving university status in 1961. Today, it hosts over 150 degree programs, including a specialized aviation program with schools at multiple airports and an Institute for Cyber Security scheduled to open by Fall 2026.
The institution also emphasizes high-level academic distinction through the Society of Yeager Scholars. Named after Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, this honors-based program requires a 3.5 GPA. Students fulfilling every criteria are granted a medallion featuring bits of identical material used for the Bell X-1 plane.
