How a viral iPhone queue transformed an aspiring actor into a global musician
In short: In 2007, Marc Rebillet was just a man waiting in line for the first iPhone. After a woman paid him $800 for his spot, a viral video changed his life forever. Today, he is a master of improvised funk, building entire musical worlds one loop at a time.
Marc Rebillet's rise is a testament to the power of digital spontaneity. Before his music career took off in 2016, he spent a decade working various jobs, including as a server and an executive assistant, while producing music under the moniker 'leae.' His transition from a Dallas student of classical piano to a global internet sensation was accelerated by the aggressive growth of social media, where his Facebook following jumped from roughly 10,000 to 100,000 in just a matter of weeks.
His signature sound is built on the Boss RC-505 loop station, a tool that allows him to layer vocals, keyboards, and percussion in real-time. This setup facilitates his highly interactive, almost entirely improvised performances, which often feature lyrics ranging from the frivolous to the profound. While some critics view him through a comedic lens, others, like WBUR's Tonya Mosley, suggest his songs often function as a form of insightful social commentary.
Rebillet has successfully bridged the gap between bedroom streaming and major festival stages. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he pivoted to digital platforms, using Twitch to reach millions and raise significant funds for coronavirus-related charities. From his early days performing in Dallas bars to headlining major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, his career has been defined by an energetic, unscripted approach that turns every performance into a unique, one-of-a-kind event.
