The studio that pioneered computer-animated television for a new generation
In short: In 1993, a group of visionaries in Vancouver set out to change television forever. By leveraging emerging CGI technology, they moved beyond music videos to create the world's first fully computer-animated half-hour series, forever altering the landscape of children's entertainment and multimedia franchises.
Mainframe Entertainment Inc. was created by John Grace, Gavin Blair, Phil Mitchell, Ian Pearson, and Christopher Brough. in 1993. was established to push the boundaries of computer-generated imagery (CGI). After using this tech for music videos such as 'Money for Nothing' and 'Let's Get Rocked,' the founders settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. This location offered tax incentives, cheaper equipment shipping, and closeness to Los Angeles.
The studio's early legacy is defined by groundbreaking television milestones. The first half-hour series created entirely via computer, ReBoot, debuted on YTV in Canada and ABC in the US during 1994. This was followed by the 1996 debut of Beast Wars, a reimagined version of Hasbro's Transformers brand. These successes helped establish the studio as a leader in the field, even as the company navigated the volatile economics of the industry, including an $11 million loss during its first year on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1997.
Mainframe's influence extends into massive multimedia franchises, most notably through a long-standing partnership with Mattel. Starting in 2001 with the direct-to-video release of 'Barbie in the Nutcracker'—which sold over 3.4 million units in its first year—the studio became a primary producer for the Barbie franchise. After several rebrands, including periods as Rainmaker Animation and Rainmaker Entertainment, the studio returned to its original name, Mainframe Studios, in 2020 under the holding company WOW! Unlimited Media.
