In short: In the year 2307, humanity faces an energy crisis that triggers constant global conflict. To stop the bloodshed, a private organization called Celestial Being emerges with a radical plan: use superior technology to forcibly unite the world. But does peace achieved through violence remain true peace?

The setting of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is defined by the depletion of fossil fuels and the rise of Dyson rings—massive solar power collectors orbiting Earth. Despite offering almost limitless power, these resources mostly serve three dominant nations: Japan, New Zealand, and the Americas under the Union; mainland Asia plus Oceania governed by the Human Reform League; and the AEU, which manages Europe alongside sections of the Arctic and North Atlantic. This uneven distribution leaves minor nations in poverty and fuels constant warfare over remaining resources.

To combat this chaos, Celestial Being operates as a paramilitary group deploying four advanced machines known as "Gundams." Their goal is to eradicate war through intervention. However, their actions prompt the three major powers to form the United Nations Army. This escalation leads to the creation of the A-Laws, an autonomous peacekeeping force that eventually begins using inhumane tactics and oppression in the name of 'unity,' highlighting the recurring theme of how authoritarian measures can be justified by noble intentions.

The narrative explores deeper philosophical questions through "Innovation," a trans-human process intended to ensure humanity's survival. The conflict culminates when the protagonist, Setsuna F. Seiei, undergoes this process himself. By the series' end, the Federation disbands the A-Laws to pursue genuine peace, while Celestial Being retreats into the shadows, leaving the question of whether true global unity can be manufactured by force or must be earned through systemic change.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Seiji Mizushima, the series was a landmark for the franchise as the first Gundam television show animated in widescreen and high-definition. The production involved over 300 staff members who spent approximately two years planning the detailed designs and narrative structure.
