Can a sequel stand on its own when its predecessor is essential viewing?
In short: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, the tenth installment in the legendary franchise, follows a new protagonist, Shinn Asuka, amidst a brewing war between genetically enhanced Coordinators and regular Naturals. While it achieved massive commercial success in Japan, the series remains a complex study in balancing legacy characters with fresh perspectives.
Set two years after the original series, the plot begins when the leader of Orb, Cagalli Yula Athha, meets with Gilbert Durandal to discuss new mobile suit construction for the military organization ZAFT. The narrative quickly escalates as the battleship Minerva is drawn into a conflict involving the terrorist group Blue Cosmos and the super weapon Requiem. This sequel was designed to shift the focus from the original series' central relationship between Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala toward Shinn Asuka's personal journey. However, director Mitsuo Fukuda noted that Kira’s role evolved significantly as he confronted Durandal’s 'Destiny Plan,' an ideology that sought to dictate human occupations based on genetics.
The series was a commercial juggernaut, selling over one million DVD volumes in Japan and winning the Animage Anime Grand Prix in both 2004 and 2005. Its soundtrack, featuring artists like T.M.Revolution, also dominated the Oricon charts. Despite this popularity, critical reception was nuanced. Critics often compared it to its predecessor, with some arguing that the original series' backstory was essential to fully grasp the plot. While the animation and mecha designs were widely praised, the initial reaction to Shinn Asuka was mixed, as his antagonistic personality sometimes felt overshadowed by returning characters like Kira Yamato.
The production faced its own dramatic arc. A planned theatrical film was indefinitely postponed due to the illness of writer Chiaki Morosawa, who passed away in 2016. It was not until January 2024 that the sequel film, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, finally reached audiences. The television series itself saw various iterations, including a 2013 HD remaster and a special OVA, Final Plus, which was created to improve an ending that many viewers initially felt was weak. By blending high-stakes political themes with intense mobile suit combat, the series remains a debated but undeniably significant pillar of the Gundam franchise.
