How a secret radio listener from East Berlin became a global trance pioneer
In short: Growing up in East Berlin, Paul van Dyk had to listen to Western music in secret. From smuggled mixtapes to a life-altering stage accident, his journey from a broadcast technician to a world number one DJ reveals the profound power of underground culture and the resilience of the human spirit.
Born in 1971 in East Berlin, van Dyk’s musical foundation was built in isolation. Lacking access to record stores, he secretly tuned into Western radio stations like Radio in the American Sector and Sender Freies Berlin, relying on smuggled mixtapes. He found a primary influence in the early electronic melodies of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, a clandestine education that shaped his approach before he moved to Hamburg and back to Berlin in 1990.
His rise was meteoric. After his first DJ appearance in 1991 at Tresor, he achieved international success with "For an Angel" and Humate's "Love Stimulation" remix. By 2005 and 2006, he was voted the world's number one DJ by both DJ Magazine and Mixmag. A trance pioneer, he established himself in Britain with the album Seven Ways. His career featured high-profile collaborations with David Byrne and BT, selling over 3 million albums by 2008.
On 29 February 2016, he suffered a near-fatal fall through a stage gap in Utrecht. The resulting spinal and brain injuries led to a long convalescence and a legal battle against ALDA. In 2019, a court awarded him $12 million in damages. Despite his injuries, van Dyk continues to use his platform for advocacy, viewing electronic dance music as a diplomatic tool for peace.
