In short: From a disastrous debut where he couldn't even find the headphone jack, Alexander Paul Coe—known as Sasha—rose to become the world's number one DJ. His journey from illegal warehouse raves to global arena tours redefined the technical and commercial boundaries of dance music.

Sasha’s ascent began in the late 1980s, fueled by the rebellious energy of acid house at Manchester’s Haçienda. Initially self-taught, his early career was marked by financial struggle; he performed at illegal warehouse raves in Blackburn and Blackpool simply to fund his growing record collection. His technical foundation was refined through the study of key mixing and beatmatching, skills he learned from DJ Jon DaSilva.

By the 1990s, Sasha had moved beyond the club circuit to become a global phenomenon. Alongside collaborator John Digweed, he helped define the trance sound and pioneered the 'superstar DJ' era. Their 2002 Delta Heavy Tour was a landmark moment, featuring laser shows and video production that brought the scale of rock concerts to the electronic scene, playing to 85,000 people across 31 US cities.

Beyond the decks, Sasha pushed the boundaries of music production. He moved away from traditional mix albums toward more complex, original works like the 2002 album Airdrawndagger, which blended genres in a way that confused some critics. He also embraced technological shifts, using software like Ableton Live and Logic Pro to create the 'Involver' series, which re-engineered tracks at a much deeper level than standard compilations.

Despite his massive influence—including being voted World No. 1 DJ in 2000—Sasha has remained a figure of nuance. While some critics, such as Alexis Petridis, blamed the rise of 'superstar DJs' for the eventual decline of the superclub era, Sasha continued to innovate, even becoming the first DJ to use Instant Live's services to sell live sets to thousands of fans.
