How a British DJ became the global ambassador for electronic music
In short: Pete Tong is more than a radio host; he is a cultural force. From his early days playing weddings at age 15 to his MBE for services to broadcasting, Tong has shaped the dance music landscape, even inspiring a popular English slang phrase for when things go wrong.
Born in Dartford, Kent, in 1960, Pete Tong’s career began with a simple mobile disco in a Ford Transit van. His early professional years were spent building a reputation in the Kent music scene, working with the 'Soul Mafia' to bring weekenders to seaside towns like Caister-on-Sea and Prestatyn. This grassroots foundation eventually led him to London Records as an A&R manager, where he helped introduce the Chicago house music sound to British audiences through his 1986 compilation, The House Sound of Chicago, Vol. 1.
Tong’s influence extends far beyond the DJ booth. He is a mainstay on BBC Radio 1, where he hosts the long-running Essential Selection—a show he has presented since January 1991—and the Essential Mix. Recognised for his immense influence, he earned an MBE during the 2014 New Year Honours for his work in music and broadcasting.
The DJ's name has even entered the English lexicon. Used as rhyming slang meaning "it's all gone wrong," the idiom "It's all gone Pete Tong" was allegedly created by Paul Oakenfold for a late 1987 fanzine piece named "Bermondsey Goes Balearic." Tong has since adopted this term for his iHeartRadio Evolution US radio show and his Ibiza club night at Pacha.
Throughout his career, Tong has remained a pivotal figure in the industry, from organizing the annual International Music Summit in Ibiza to performing at the 2015 BBC Proms. Whether through his record label FFRR Records or his various radio formats, he remains a central pillar of the global electronic music community.
