How the Power Rangers celebrated two decades of morphing with a massive alien war
In short: Marking the franchise's 20th anniversary, Power Rangers Megaforce brought together a new team of heroes to defend Earth against extraterrestrial threats. This two-season saga, spanning 2013 and 2014, blended original storytelling with footage from Japanese Super Sentai series, culminating in an epic crossover featuring legendary Rangers from across the show's history.
Debuting on Nickelodeon in February 2013, Power Rangers Megaforce introduced a group of five students tasked by the supernatural guardian Gosei to protect the planet. These recruits—Troy, Jake, Gia, Noah, and Emma—gained combat mastery to fight the Warstar aliens. The production notably utilized costumes and props from the Japanese series Tensou Sentai Goseiger, marking the eighteenth entry in the long-running franchise.
The narrative expanded in 2014 with Power Rangers Super Megaforce. This second season shifted the aesthetic to an angel and pirate theme, drawing from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. The Rangers received new equipment, allowing them to transform into any past legendary hero. This season also saw the arrival of Orion, an alien survivor who joined the team as the Silver Ranger. The stakes reached a climax when the Armada, led by Emperor Mavro and his sons Vekar and Vrak, launched a final assault on Earth.
The series reached its emotional peak during the final confrontation. After the Rangers' Megazords were destroyed, the team faced an overwhelming number of X-Borg soldiers. In a decisive moment, past Rangers—including iconic figures like Tommy Oliver, T.J. Jarvis Johnson, and Jayden Shiba—returned to aid the team. This massive gathering of heroes successfully repelled the invasion, cementing the series as a celebration of the franchise's legacy. The production was so integrated into the brand's milestone that the Rangers even appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in both 2012 and 2013.
Beyond the screen, the series marked a return to tradition, reintroducing the iconic phrase 'it's Morphin' Time' for the first time since the Power Rangers Zeo era. By weaving together decades of lore, the show bridged the gap between original fans and a new generation, using the vast history of the Power Rangers to fuel its climactic battle for the survival of the world.
