How Dino Fury transformed the legacy of the Power Rangers franchise
In short: The twenty-second entry in the Power Rangers saga marked a major shift in storytelling. By moving away from standalone episodes toward a serialized narrative, Dino Fury changed how the franchise unfolds, eventually leading to a historic milestone for the series during its anniversary celebration.
Premiering on Nickelodeon on February 20, 2021, Power Rangers Dino Fury represented a significant production shift. It was the first series produced by Entertainment One following Hasbro's 2019 acquisition. The show utilized footage and elements from the Japanese series Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, with some recycled props from Ressha Sentai ToQger. This production was the first to use footage from the forty-third entry of the Super Sentai metaseries. It also incorporated minimal elements from the series ToQger.
The series also introduced a new era of storytelling. Executive Producer Simon Bennett noted that, unlike previous seasons where standalone episodes were mandated—except for the first and last two—Dino Fury allowed for serialized episodes. Originally planned as a single 22-episode season, the series was expanded with 22 additional episodes to fill gaps in the existing storyline. This shift in format allowed the production team to maintain a consistent overarching plot. The expansion ensured the narrative flow remained intact despite the increased episode count.
The narrative follows the battle against Sporix Beasts, evil alien monsters that ravaged the planet Rafkon sixty-five million years ago. The conflict involves six Rafkonian knights and six dinosaurs granted power by the Morphin' Masters. The current team includes Zayto, Amelia Jones, Ollie Akana, Izzy Garcia, Javi Garcia, and Aiyon. The team's recruitment was prompted by the accidental release of the Sporix by the warrior Void Knight. This task was undertaken by Zayto and a cyborg dinosaur named Solon.
The momentum of Dino Fury carried into its successor, Cosmic Fury, which released on Netflix on September 29, 2023. As the franchise's 30th anniversary celebration, Cosmic Fury achieved a milestone by featuring a female Red Ranger for a full season. It also saw the return of David Yost as Billy Cranston. This anniversary season featured original suits for the characters. It also utilised Zord and villain footage adapted from the Japanese series Uchu Sentai Kyuranger.
