How a Shrek sidekick became a swashbuckling star in his own feature film
In short: Before he was a solo lead, the legendary feline was a breakout star in Shrek 2. DreamWorks eventually granted him an origin story that explores his life as a fugitive in San Ricardo. This animated adventure blends fairy tale tropes with a distinct Spanish-inspired aesthetic and a surprisingly emotional core.
The 2011 film Puss in Boots traces the early life of the titular anthropomorphic cat, voiced by Antonio Banderas. Originally conceived as a direct-to-video project titled with a reference to an ogre-slaying narrative, the film was redeveloped into a theatrical release by 2006. Director Chris Miller, who previously worked on Shrek the Third, led the production, while executive producer Guillermo del Toro significantly influenced the creative direction. Del Toro helped design the town of San Ricardo as a fusion of Spanish and Mexican architecture and pushed for a more unconventional, redemptive arc for the character of Humpty Alexander Dumpty.
The narrative follows Puss as he attempts to clear his name after being framed for a bank robbery by his childhood friend, Humpty. The plot incorporates elements from the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, including magic beans and a giant's castle, though the filmmakers chose to kill the giant off-screen to subvert audience expectations. The film also features Kitty Softpaws, a street-savvy cat voiced by Salma Hayek, who serves as Puss's counterpart. The production was notable for being the first DreamWorks Animation film to outsource significant animation work to a studio in India, a decision driven by the need to manage a heavy production schedule.
Commercially, the film was a success, grossing $555 million worldwide against a $130 million production budget. It set a record for the highest-grossing Halloween weekend opening at the time, a title it held for 12 years. Critical reception was generally positive, with reviewers praising the film's wit and visual style, though some critics felt the storytelling did not break new ground. The film's legacy continued through a Netflix series that ran from 2015 to 2018 and a 2022 sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, cementing the character's status as a standalone franchise lead.
