Why a tiny cat with a deep voice became a cinematic action hero
In short: Puss in Boots began as a supporting character in Shrek 2, but his outsized personality and Spanish flair quickly demanded a standalone spotlight. By blending the spirit of legendary swashbucklers with the unpredictable nature of a real cat, filmmakers created an icon that defies his pint-sized, furry appearance.
The character of Puss was designed by Tom Hester, drawing inspiration from the real-life cats of director Andrew Adamson and supervisor Ken Bielenberg. While the classic fairy tale provided a loose foundation, the creative team pivoted toward a grander, Spaghetti Western-inspired structure. They infused Puss with the adventurous spirit of figures like Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Zorro, the latter being a direct nod to Antonio Banderas, who voices the character in English, Spanish, and Italian.
Banderas played a pivotal role in shaping Puss's identity. Initially, filmmakers considered a high-pitched voice, but Banderas and the team opted for a deeper, breathier tone. This contrast between his small stature and booming, dramatic delivery became a primary source of comic relief. Banderas described the effect as a lion trapped in a cat's body, a choice that forced the animation team to rethink how they depicted the character's movements and personality.
Beyond the films, Puss has appeared in various media, including a spin-off television series produced for Netflix and numerous shorts. Whether he is navigating a tragic redemption arc in his own feature films or protecting the town of San Lorenzo in episodic adventures, Puss remains a complex figure. He is defined by his fierce loyalty, his tendency to take himself far too seriously, and a persistent, roguish charm that makes him one of the most enduring figures in the Shrek universe.
