In short: Created for Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, Renee Montoya has evolved from a uniformed officer into a complex vigilante. After being framed for murder and losing her career, she traded her badge for a mask, operating as the second Question from a lighthouse in North Carolina.

Renee Montoya's journey is defined by resilience against systemic corruption. Originally introduced as a uniformed officer partnered with Harvey Bullock, she rose to the rank of homicide detective under Commissioner Gordon. However, her career in the Gotham City Police Department was shattered when the crime boss Two-Face publicly outed her as a lesbian and framed her for murder. This betrayal, which led her parents to disown her, forced her to resign from the force.

Following her departure from the GCPD, Montoya entered a period of deep depression and alcoholism. Her path shifted when the original Question, Vic Sage, approached her with a modified Bat-Signal. After Sage's death during a conflict with Intergang, Montoya inherited his mantle, donning the mask to continue his crusade. This transition marked her evolution from a law enforcement official to a vigilante operating out of a lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina alongside Aristotle Rodor.

Her narrative has since expanded into high-stakes cosmic and multiversal conflicts. She has faced off against the Black Lanterns by learning to suppress her emotions to become invisible to them, and she has even engaged in combat with Lady Shiva. In a pivotal moment, Montoya accepted the Mark of Cain to stop the criminal Vandal Savage, a choice that ended his reign of terror but left her face disfigured.

Throughout her history, Montoya has transitioned between roles: an antagonist turned ally in the Arrowverse series Batwoman, a cinematic presence in the 2020 film Birds of Prey, and a key figure in major comic events like Final Crisis and Blackest Night.
