The original Lois Lane who helped define a superhero icon
In short: Before the modern cinematic universes, there was Phyllis Coates. Best known for her portrayal of Lois Lane, she brought the intrepid reporter to life during the first season of the Adventures of Superman television series, leaving a legacy that spanned over five decades of American entertainment.
Born Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell on January 15, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas, Coates began her journey to stardom under her birth name. Her early career was shaped by the variety stage, where she was discovered by comedian Ken Murray at a Hollywood and Vine restaurant. This discovery allowed her to hone her comic timing through performances in his variety show, Blackouts, and as a showgirl for Earl Carroll.
Coates's most significant contribution to pop culture remains her role as Lois Lane. Her tenure ended when she became unavailable for the second season, at which point Noel Neill—who had previously played the character in 1948 and 1950 Columbia serials—took over the role.
Throughout a career lasting more than fifty years, Coates was a prolific presence in both film and television. She appeared in numerous westerns, serials like Panther Girl of the Kongo (1955), and cult classics such as I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957). Despite the enduring popularity of the Superman series in syndication, Coates initially sought to distance herself from the role in the 1960s to avoid being typecast. She eventually passed away on October 11, 2023, at the age of 96, having been the last surviving regular cast member of the original Adventures of Superman series until her death.
Her personal life was marked by four marriages, including to director Richard L. Bare and jazz pianist Robert Nelms. After a period of semi-retirement following her 1962 marriage to physician Howard Press, she resumed her acting career after their divorce in 1986.
