In short: How do you fit dozens of conflicting sci-fi universes into one cohesive history? For the anime Turn A Gundam, the answer lies in universal quantification. The series uses a specific mathematical symbol to symbolically embrace every previous entry in the massive Gundam franchise as part of its own reality.

Created for the 20th anniversary of the Gundam Big Bang, director Yoshiyuki Tomino designed Turn A Gundam (1999–2000) to "affirmatively accept" all previous works. The title uses the turned 'A' (∀), a mathematical symbol representing universal quantification, to signal that every prior series exists within this world. This narrative device allows the show to feature mobile suits from various eras—including those from the Universal Century—preserved by nanomachines and excavated by different factions. The series was compiled into two feature-length films in 2002. It also featured a unique mecha design by American visual futurist Syd Mead. This specific suit was the first Gundam designed entirely by a foreigner.

The series establishes its own calendar, the Correct Century (CC), which is a wordplay on the Western Common Era. According to the show's internal lore, the 'Dark History' reveals that events from other Gundam series took place before CC 2345. While some sources suggest this timeline began around UC0100 or even 3,000 years prior, others describe a much vaster gap of tens of thousands of years to accommodate every existing timeline.

However, this unification creates significant logical hurdles. To reconcile the different universes, the world would have had to undergo repeated civilization collapses—a process that contradicts the fact that Earth's continents and some place names remain largely unchanged over time. Furthermore, official branding is inconsistent; while some projects treat Turn A as a final result of all timelines, others list it exclusively within the Universal Century universe, leaving the true connection between these disparate histories an open question. The show aired on Fuji TV as its only anime entry. The production marked the final time the franchise used hand-painted cels for most of its animation. It also features two manga adaptations and a prequel story.
