How Nickelodeon reimagined the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a new generation of fans
In short: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is built on reinvention, and in 2018, Nickelodeon launched a bold new take on the iconic brothers. This series introduced younger, lighter versions of the heroes, complete with mystical powers, fresh character designs, and a hidden magical city beneath the streets of New York.
Developed by Ant Ward and Andy Suriano, the series was designed to keep the franchise relevant for contemporary audiences while honoring its long-standing appeal. The show follows Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo as they navigate their early teenage years, discovering hidden realms and mastering unique ninja abilities. Unlike previous iterations, this version emphasizes a younger, more humorous tone, with the brothers working to protect the world from various threats, including the dangerous Foot Clan and the alchemist Baron Draxum.
The production process saw significant shifts throughout its run. Initially announced in March 2017 with a 26-episode order, the show premiered in July 2018. While a second season was quickly greenlit, its original 26-episode count was eventually halved to 13 episodes. The series concluded in August 2020, but the story continued beyond the small screen. A feature film sequel, which pits the brothers against alien invaders known as the Krang, arrived on Netflix in August 2022.
Beyond the animation, the project involved extensive multimedia integration. The franchise expanded through comic books published by IDW, a toy line debuted at the 2018 New York City Toy Fair, and even a collaborative Splatfest tournament within the video game Splatoon 2. The show also featured notable voice talent, including John Cena as Baron Draxum and Rob Paulsen, a veteran of previous iterations, serving as the voice director. This multifaceted approach aimed to sustain the Turtles' legacy by exploring new dimensions of the characters' world.
