How a Formula Ford car became the star of a preschool television phenomenon
In short: Created by a former Brands Hatch manager, Roary the Racing Car blended stop-motion charm with computer-generated imagery to capture the imagination of young viewers. Running from 2007 to 2010, the series followed the adventures of anthropomorphic vehicles at the Silver Hatch racetrack, narrated by legendary driver Sir Stirling Moss.
The series was the brainchild of David Jenkins, who drew inspiration from his time in senior management at the Brands Hatch circuit. The concept solidified while he watched a Grand Prix with his young son. Developed by Keith Chapman—the creative force behind Bob the Builder and Paw Patrol—the show featured a distinct visual style that combined stop-motion animation with CGI for complex sequences. Production was initially handled by Cosgrove Hall Films before Chapman Entertainment took over for the second series.
Set at the fictional Silver Hatch circuit, a portmanteau of Silverstone and Brands Hatch, the show centered on Roary, a red Formula Ford car. His world was populated by a diverse cast, including the hot-tempered Formula One car Maxi, the hybrid rally car Cici, and the technologically advanced drift car Drifter. These characters navigated life under the watchful eye of the track owner, Mr. Carburettor, and the mechanic Big Chris, who acted as a fatherly figure to the racing machines.
Beyond the racing action, the show explored themes of friendship, learning, and occasional mischief. Characters like the accident-prone Tin Top and the helpful tow truck Plugger added layers to the community, while non-racing figures like Farmer Green and the rabbit Flash provided variety. The series was notable for its authentic racing pedigree, featuring narration from Sir Stirling Moss in the UK and Sam Hornish Jr. in the US, grounding the whimsical, anthropomorphic world in the language of professional motorsport.
