How Rio 2 Expanded the Animated Franchise from City Streets to the Amazon Rainforest
In short: Three years after the original film, the blue macaws Blu and Jewel trade the vibrant streets of Rio for the untamed Amazon. This 2014 sequel, directed by Carlos Saldanha, pits the domesticated birds against illegal loggers and a vengeful cockatoo, blending musical comedy with a high-stakes environmental struggle.
Released in 2014 by 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios, Rio 2 follows the protagonists as they seek a hidden flock of Spix's macaws. The narrative shifts from the urban setting of the first film to the deep jungle, where Blu struggles to adapt to wild life while his owner, Linda, and her husband, Túlio, face threats from an illegal logging operation led by Big Boss. The film explores themes of domestication versus nature, as Jewel reconnects with her father, Eduardo, and her childhood friend, Roberto.
The production was marked by significant creative efforts, including a soundtrack co-produced by Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes and composer John Powell. The film features a massive ensemble cast, with actors like Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg reprising their roles alongside newcomers such as Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth. Tragically, screenwriter Don Rhymer passed away during production in 2012, and the final film was dedicated to his memory. The project also served as a cultural touchstone, with promotional ties to the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Critical reception was mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 50% approval rating and Metacritic assigning a score of 49 out of 100. Critics noted that while the film was visually colorful and ambitious, its busy plot could be exhausting for older viewers. Despite this, the film was a commercial success, grossing $499 million against a budget estimated between $103 million and $130 million. It remains a notable entry in the studio's catalog, later finding a home on streaming platforms like Disney+ in 2023.
