The village where every resident is actually a robot
In short: In the fictional village of St. Mystere, the inhabitants share a strange obsession with brain teasers. For Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton, solving these puzzles is the only way to uncover the truth behind a legendary heirloom and a mysterious inheritance.
Released in Japan in 2007, Professor Layton and the Curious Village was developed by Level-5. The game's premise follows archaeologist Hershel Layton and his assistant, Luke Triton, as they investigate the village of St. Mystere to find the 'Golden Apple.' This artifact was left by the late Baron Augustus Reinhold as a test for his heirs.
The investigation takes a surreal turn when the duo discovers the village's secret: the residents are not human, but robots created by the Baron and a man named Bruno. These mechanical citizens were designed to challenge the wits of anyone seeking the Baron's fortune. This obsession with puzzles explains why the villagers frequently ask players to solve logic puzzles and sliding puzzles using the Nintendo DS touchscreen.
The game's development was inspired by Akihiro Hino's childhood love for the Atama no Taisou puzzle book series by Professor Akira Tago. To avoid copyright issues, the name was changed, and the characters were designed to echo the dynamic of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. While the original game was a hit, selling over 3.17 million copies worldwide, a remake is currently in development for a 2027 release.
Beyond the central mystery, the game features complex mechanics where players earn 'picarats' for correct answers. Mistakes can reduce a puzzle's value by approximately 10% per attempt. The narrative concludes with a moral choice: the Baron's treasure is linked to the robots' functionality, leading Flora Reinhold to leave the gold behind to ensure the villagers continue to function.
