In the Grishaverse, magic is not a mystical force but a molecular science.
In short: Shadow and Bone brings Leigh Bardugo’s fantasy world to life, centering on Alina Starkov, a cartographer who discovers she is a Sun Summoner. In this war-torn reality, magic-users known as Grisha manipulate matter at the molecular level, navigating a landscape divided by an impenetrable, creature-filled wall of darkness.
The Grishaverse is defined by The Small Science, a unique ability that allows Grisha to manipulate matter at the molecular level rather than relying on traditional magic. These practitioners are categorized into three distinct orders: Etherealki, who summon natural elements like wind, water, and fire; Materialki, who manipulate physical substances like glass and metal; and Corporalki, who possess the power to influence the human body, serving as healers or Heartrenders.
Central to the narrative is the nation of Ravka, which is split in two by the Shadow Fold, a vast, dark expanse created by a Grisha known as the Black Heretic. While Ravka’s Second Army trains Grisha to defend the nation, the country faces external threats from Fjerda and internal pressure from its western territories seeking independence. General Kirigan, also known as The Darkling, leads the Second Army in a desperate search for the Sun Summoner, the only individual believed capable of destroying the Fold.
The series, developed by Eric Heisserer for Netflix, premiered in April 2021 and spanned two seasons before its cancellation in November 2023. It weaves together the plot of the original novel with storylines from the Six of Crows duology, introducing characters like Kaz Brekker and his criminal gang. Despite receiving praise for its world-building and cast, the show faced criticism regarding its pacing, ultimately concluding its run after adapting several of Bardugo’s works, including Siege and Storm, Ruin and Rising, and parts of Crooked Kingdom.
