In short: Severance explores a chilling medical procedure that divides an employee’s mind into two distinct personas: the innie, who exists only at work, and the outie, who lives a separate life. Created by Dan Erickson, this sci-fi thriller examines the dark consequences of total compartmentalization and the mystery of corporate control.

The premise of Severance was born from creator Dan Erickson’s own desire to skip through the monotony of office life. Developed in 2012 and later refined, the show centers on the biotechnology firm Lumon, where employees undergo a proprietary surgical procedure to sever their work-self from their home-self. This creates two personas sharing one body: the innie, who has no memory of the outside world, and the outie, who has no knowledge of their professional tasks. These innies exist in a windowless, labyrinthine underground workspace, performing vague objectives for the Macrodata Refinement department.

The narrative follows Mark Scout, a former history professor who chooses severance to cope with the grief of losing his wife, Gemma. As the series progresses, the innie version of Mark begins to question the nature of his confinement, leading the team to uncover disturbing truths about Lumon’s culture and the cult-like worship of its founder, Kier Eagan. The show’s tone draws inspiration from surrealist works like The Truman Show and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, blending psychological tension with a critique of corporate surveillance and the loss of personal agency.

The conflict intensifies as the innies realize their outies have kept them in a state of perpetual labor, leading to a desperate rebellion. By the end of the second season in March 2025, the show had become the most-watched series on Apple TV+. As the characters navigate the dangerous, experimental process of reintegration—an attempt to merge their split consciousnesses—the series forces viewers to confront the ethical implications of a technology that treats human experience as a commodity to be partitioned and controlled.
