In short: In the 2016 reboot, Godzilla is no longer just a monster, but a rapidly mutating lifeform. Triggered by radioactive waste in Tokyo Bay, this creature adapts to every threat, evolving through distinct, terrifying forms that render conventional military weaponry entirely useless.

The creature's biology is defined by constant, spontaneous adaptation. This being first appeared in 2016, having been altered by US radioactive refuse discarded into Tokyo Bay throughout the late-1950s. Its evolution is so aggressive that it can shed its own skin to escape its previous body, though Toho Co., Ltd. vetoed this specific visual in the final film.

The creature's progression is marked by distinct physiological shifts. Its second form, nicknamed 'Kamata-Kun' by fans, is a sickly-yellow, horizontal creature with bleeding gills that struggle to breathe on land. By the third form, it has become bipedal with a long neck and closed gills, signaling its adaptation to terrestrial life. The fourth form is a massive, dark-skinned bipedal entity with a tail twice the height of its body and a protective nictitating membrane to protect its eyes from explosions.

The most unsettling aspect is its capacity for replication. After being hit by bunker-buster bombs from a Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, a deleted scene suggests the monster could replicate through any matter separated from itself. This is visually represented by its fifth form: humanoid creatures sprouting from its tail. While fans call these 'Manzillas,' their true origin remains a subject of speculation, with some suggesting they may be a merger with the character Goro Maki.

Ultimately, the creature remains a persistent threat. Even after being neutralized by a complex plan involving a blood coagulant, the entity was left frozen in the ruins of Tokyo, unable to be truly killed.
