In short: Imagine being so terrible at writing poetry that people joked you deserved a railroad spike through the head. This was the origin of Spike, a fictional vampire who evolved from a brief villain into a complex anti-hero. He transformed from a mocked Victorian poet into a violent, punk rock cultural rebel.

In the lore of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, William Pratt was an unsuccessful Victorian poet mocked as "William the Bloody" for his "bloody awful" verses. The nickname Spike was not originally a violent choice; it was a jab at his literary failures. It was only later that he adopted the name as a nom de guerre, choosing to torture people with railroad spikes as a way to lean into the mockery of his past.

Sired in 1880 by the vampire Drusilla, William was an anomaly. While most new vampires turned on their families, William turned his mother into a vampire to save her from tuberculosis. When she became a soulless monster who taunted him, he was forced to stake her—an act of tragic devotion. This capacity for love and loyalty remained his defining trait, even as he adopted the persona of a punk rock cultural rebel.

Spike's history is a map of 19th and 20th-century history. He was imprisoned for tax evasion in 1894, killed a Slayer in China during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion, and was even captured by Nazis for experimentation in 1943. He famously attended Woodstock in 1969, where he accidentally became high after drinking a hippie's blood, and killed a second Slayer in New York in 1977, stealing the leather duster that became his trademark look.

The character's evolution is a masterclass in narrative expansion. Originally intended by creator Joss Whedon to be a brief villain, Spike became a "breakout character" and a complex anti-hero. He eventually reacquired his soul to prove his love for the Slayer, Buffy Summers, and died a hero in the series finale before being resurrected in the spin-off series Angel.
