In short: For decades, fans debated whether the iconic mushroom on Toad's head was a piece of clothing or a biological feature. In 2018, Nintendo finally settled the mystery, revealing a fact that changes how we view this staple of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Toad first appeared in Super Mario Bros., where he and his race served as 'Mushroom Retainers' for Princess Peach. While they often played minimal roles—famously delivering the message that the princess was in another castle—they eventually evolved into versatile allies. In 3D titles like Super Mario 64, Toad shifted from a background retainer to a primary helper who explains backstories and guides the player through objectives.

The character's design has sparked specific mechanical questions for developers. During the creation of Mario Kart: Double Dash, Nintendo struggled to find a suitable racing partner for Toad, leading them to eventually create Toadette to fill that slot. Furthermore, while many Toads are indistinguishable, unique individuals like Captain Toad and Toadsworth exist as notable exceptions to the 'generic' mushroom people.

During February 2018, Yoshiaki Koizumi provided a key distinction by stating that Toad's head mushroom constitutes his actual anatomy rather than an accessory. This distinction is vital for maintaining the internal logic of Nintendo's intellectual property. To protect the universe from being cluttered by too many new characters, the IP team often relies on Toads as the primary non-playable characters (NPCs) that players interact with in modern titles like Paper Mario.

Toad's wide range of appearances is shown through diverse media roles: he functioned as a playable figure in Wario's Woods puzzles, a voyager in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and a busker within the non-canon Super Mario Bros. movie. film.
