In short: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is not a standard ride. Using a complex blend of trackless vehicles, motion simulators, and a concealed drop tower, this multi-modal attraction places guests directly into a high-stakes battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

Developed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the attraction is so ambitious that it has been popularly designated an "ultra-E-Ticket" or "U-Ticket," a term used to describe rides of exceptional scale and immersion. To achieve this, the project—originally codenamed "Alcatraz" in reference to its prison-break plot—utilizes over five million lines of code and features 65 Audio-Animatronic figures. Building this attraction necessitated the most extensive concrete pour ever seen across Disney Parks.

The experience is set in the in-universe year 34 ABY, following the Battle of Crait. The narrative follows a Resistance mission to protect the planet Batuu from the First Order. Guests are cast as recruits, navigating a sequence of events that includes a holographic briefing with Rey, a transport flight to Pacara, and an interrogation by Kylo Ren and General Hux.

Technically, the ride is a hybrid of multiple systems. It employs an LPS-powered trackless dark ride that uses wireless charging and RFID floor pucks for navigation. It also integrates Musion projections, OLED displays, and a motion simulator mounted on a drop shaft to simulate an escape pod's descent. Even the visual effects are highly engineered, using persistence of vision and LED arrays to simulate blaster fire traveling through the air.

The attraction's rollout was staggered. While originally intended to open with the Galaxy's Edge lands, it was delayed to serve as a "phase two" opening. The version at Disney's Hollywood Studios debuted on December 5, 2019, followed by the Disneyland Park version on January 17, 2020.
