In short: When archivist Kirby Mazrachi survives a brutal attack, her reality begins to fracture. She discovers a series of murders spanning decades that mirror her own trauma, leading her on a hunt for a killer who seems to move through time itself.

Based on Lauren Beukes's 2013 novel, the Apple TV+ series reimagines the mechanics of time and trauma. While the book presents the story through the perspectives of Harper's victims, showrunner Silka Luisa chose to center the narrative on Kirby Mazrachi, played by Elisabeth Moss. Luisa envisioned time as a string that the killer, Harper Curtis, moves up and down; the closer he moves toward the top, the more Kirby feels the impact of his actions.

The television adaptation introduces several departures from the source material to heighten the drama. In the series, Kirby is ten years older than in the novel and works as an archivist at the Chicago Sun-Times, having changed her name from Sharon Leads to hide her history. The show also introduces shifting realities—such as her cat becoming a dog or her desk moving position—that do not appear in the book. Additionally, the show avoids a romantic subplot between Kirby and reporter Dan Velazquez, a decision Moss supported to ensure the eight-episode format focused on the core mystery.

The production, which filmed in Chicago between May and October 2021, features a cast including Wagner Moura and Jamie Bell. While critics at Rotten Tomatoes noted that the time-bending concept can be disorienting, they praised Moss's performance. The series premiered on April 29, 2022, offering a visceral exploration of grief and the struggle to cut the connections to past trauma.
