Building a planetary factory to save a dying Earth
In short: You are a Pioneer, dropped onto an alien world with nothing but basic tools. Your mission: automate everything. From conveyor belts to massive space elevators, you must feed the insatiable hunger of FICSIT Inc. to unlock the secrets of a distant, desperate planet.
In the factory simulation game Satisfactory, developed by Coffee Stain Studios, players navigate a hand-crafted world of approximately 30 square kilometers. The gameplay revolves around resource extraction and complex automation. Players must construct increasingly sophisticated manufacturing tiers to produce components for 'Project Assembly,' a massive undertaking managed by the megacorp FICSIT Inc. Through the use of conveyor belts, pipelines, and vehicles, the player transforms raw planetary resources into the high-tech parts required by the corporation.
The narrative reveals a darker underlying motivation for this industrial expansion. While the player initially focuses on manufacturing, the AI guide, ADA, reveals that Project Assembly is part of the 'Save the Day Program.' This program aims to save Earth, which is reportedly becoming uninhabitable due to the short-sighted environmental destruction caused by corporate interests. The player's industrial output is essentially fueling a desperate survival effort for humanity.
Beyond the factory floor, the game explores themes of first contact. Players can discover alien artifacts known as Mercer Spheres and Somersloops. These items allow a nameless alien intelligence to communicate telepathically with the Pioneer, using them as an organic conduit. This interaction eventually leads to the development of the Dimensional Depot, a storage system that utilizes a dimensional rift or 'window' to transfer materials between worlds.
Since its early access launch on 19 March 2019, the game has seen massive commercial success. By January 2024, it had sold 5.5 million copies, generating at least US$11.5 million in revenue. Following its full release on 10 September 2024, the game has continued to expand, with Coffee Stain Studios announcing plans for a paid DLC titled 'Core Values' during a 2026 broadcast.
