Can a Qatari science fiction drama survive a world consumed by mysterious, lethal fog?
In short: In a desolate, post-apocalyptic landscape, a deadly phenomenon known as miasma brings ruin and sickness to humanity. The Pact, a science fiction series from Katara Studios, tracks two distinct bands of survivors as they navigate this fractured reality, desperately seeking the origins of the catastrophe that destroyed their world.
The Pact represents a notable entry in science fiction television, emerging from the creative vision of Bobby Barbacioru. The narrative centers on a global collapse triggered by a pervasive, enigmatic fog. This miasma acts as the primary antagonist, driving the plot as characters struggle to endure the resulting chaos and illness while hunting for answers regarding the disaster's true source.
The production process behind the series was a collaborative international effort. While the Qatari company Katara Studios spearheaded the project, the actual filming spanned multiple countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, and Qatar. This geographic diversity in production helped establish the show's distinct visual identity, grounding its speculative premise in a variety of stark, atmospheric environments that mirror the characters' harsh journey.
The creative team behind the project featured a blend of talent, with Bobby Barbacioru, Gareth Brookes, and Ahmed Al Baker leading the writing and direction. Following its initial development, the series gained broader exposure in early 2022. The Roku Channel acquired the rights in February 2022, launching the show in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada on March 26, 2022. A wider international release followed in July, managed by the distributor OMG.
The series stands out for its focus on the intersection of survival and mystery. By splitting the narrative between two groups of survivors, the show explores different reactions to the same existential threat. Whether the audience finds the resolution satisfying remains a point of engagement for viewers, but the show's commitment to its high-concept premise highlights the growing ambition of regional studios in the global science fiction market.
