A modern reimagining of a classic Martian invasion across Europe
In short: When astronomers detect a transmission from another star, the proof of extraterrestrial life is undeniable. Within days, humanity is nearly extinguished. This 2019 television adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic novel explores a world of eerie silence and desperate survival across contemporary Britain and France.
Urban Myth Films, supported by StudioCanal and Fox Networks Group, created this show as H.G.'s third TV version. Wells' 1898 novel. Unlike previous iterations, this version is set in contemporary times, focusing on the immediate aftermath of a sudden Martian invasion that leaves the global population in a state of shock and devastation. The narrative structure follows a rapid escalation: after the initial detection of intelligent life, mankind is almost entirely wiped out within days. The story centers on the remaining pockets of humanity as they grapple with the mystery of their attackers' motives. The production was a multi-national effort, with filming taking place in the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium, specifically in locations such as Bristol, Cardiff, Newport, and London. The series has seen a significant international rollout. It premiered in France in October 2019 and expanded to over 50 countries. Available on Epix and MyCanal, the production reached many areas such as Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and North America. Critics have characterized the work as a smart, atmospheric genre series that balances compelling storytelling with its derivative roots.
