Can a lifelong ambition to lead survive the messy reality of high-stakes political theater?
In short: The Politician follows Payton Hobart, a wealthy student obsessed with reaching the White House. From his initial campaign for student body president at a California academy to a fierce New York State Senate race, the series satirizes the ruthless, often absurd machinery behind modern political ambition and public image.
Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, the series debuted on Netflix in 2019. It stars Ben Platt as Payton Hobart, a character whose singular focus on the presidency drives him through increasingly complex electoral battles. The first season centers on a high school election in Santa Barbara, where Payton navigates alliances and scandals, including the strategic selection of a vice-presidential running mate who is a victim of Munchausen by Proxy disorder.
The second season shifts the setting to New York City and Albany, following Payton as a university student challenging an incumbent Majority Leader, Dede Standish, played by Judith Light. This chapter explores an ecocentric platform managed by former allies, contrasting with the conservative strategy employed by Standish’s campaign manager, Hadassah Gold. The narrative also tracks the political rise of Payton’s adoptive mother, Georgina Hobart, who pursues the governorship of California.
While the show secured a two-season order following a bidding war involving Hulu and Amazon, its critical reception fluctuated. The first season earned a 59% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting its soapy, satirical tone. The second season saw a decline to 43%, with some reviewers describing the expansion of its political scope as messy. Although a final season was initially planned to allow the lead actor to age into the role, Netflix has provided no official update on its status as of 2026.
