A silent masterpiece of survival and transformation born from a chance meeting in Tokyo.
In short: The Red Turtle is a dialogue-free animated fable that follows a shipwrecked man’s struggle against a mysterious sea creature. This international collaboration between Studio Ghibli and European partners blends traditional charcoal backgrounds with modern digital techniques to create a visual meditation on the cycles of human life and nature.
The film’s origins trace back to 2008, when Vincent Maraval of the French company Wild Bunch visited Studio Ghibli in Tokyo. During the meeting, Hayao Miyazaki recommended Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit, whose short film Father and Daughter had impressed him. After being tracked down in London, Dudok de Wit agreed to the project, eventually co-writing the screenplay with Pascale Ferran. The resulting film, released in 2016, represents a rare international co-production for the Japanese studio.
The production process was a hybrid of analog and digital artistry. While Dudok de Wit initially planned to animate on paper, he ultimately utilized a graphics tablet for the primary work. Backgrounds were crafted using charcoal on paper, scanned, and then colored in Photoshop. To maintain a natural feel, the team employed analytic animation, using live-action footage as a reference for poses rather than rotoscoping. The turtle and the raft were constructed as CGI, with animators manually retracing lines and adding shadow effects frame-by-frame to integrate them into the hand-drawn world.
Narratively, the film explores the life of a man stranded on an uninhabited island. His attempts to escape are repeatedly thwarted by a giant red turtle, leading to a surreal encounter that transforms his existence. The story follows the man as he builds a life, raises a son, and eventually grows old. The film avoids spoken language entirely, relying on its evocative visuals to convey themes of loss, family, and the inevitable return to the sea. It received widespread critical acclaim, including a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.
