A violent Western that subverts the genre through an unlikely quest for utopian gold
In short: Jacques Audiard’s 2018 film, The Sisters Brothers, follows two notorious assassins on a journey that shifts from a standard hit job to a search for a chemical formula. Despite critical acclaim for its performances and direction, this ambitious American-French co-production struggled to find its audience at the global box office.
Set in 1851, the narrative centers on Eli and Charlie Sisters, brothers hired by a wealthy figure known as the Commodore to eliminate Hermann Warm. Warm, however, is not a typical target; he is an inventor seeking to establish a utopian society in Dallas, Texas. His companion, a private detective named John Morris, initially tracks Warm for the brothers but eventually defects to his cause, drawn by the prospect of a meaningful life beyond his own father's shadow.
The film’s production was a significant international effort, marking director Jacques Audiard’s first English-language feature. Shooting began in June 2017 across various Spanish locations, including Almería and Navarre. The cast, headlined by John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix, brought a nuanced, often comedic, and deeply emotional tone to the Western genre. Critics largely praised the film, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an 87% approval rating and the Venice International Film Festival awarding Audiard the Silver Lion for Best Direction.
Despite these accolades, the film proved to be a commercial disappointment. Produced on a budget of $38 million, it grossed only $14.6 million worldwide by May 2019. The story itself is a grim meditation on violence and redemption, culminating in the tragic deaths of Warm and Morris after a chemical accident. Ultimately, the brothers find no gold, only the realization that their cycle of violence—which began with the murder of their own abusive father—has left them hollow, leading them to return home to their mother in a final, quiet act of resignation.
