A stubborn woman's final journey to a ghost town reveals the power of memory
In short: In the 1985 film The Trip to Bountiful, an elderly woman attempts to escape her overprotective family in Houston to revisit her childhood home. She discovers that her once-vibrant town has vanished, forcing a poignant confrontation with the past that ultimately reshapes her family's future.
Set in the 1940s, the story follows Carrie Watts, who yearns to return to Bountiful, a small, agriculture-based Texas town. Her son and daughter-in-law, who keep her under close watch in Houston, are aware that the town has long since disappeared. The decline of Bountiful was driven by the Great Depression and accelerated by the wartime draft and the migration of workers to industrial production plants in larger cities.
Determined to reach her goal, Mrs. Watts outwits her family and boards a bus, as train service to her destination has ceased. During her journey, she finds an unexpected ally in a fellow traveler and eventually receives help from a local sheriff. Upon arriving, she finds the town deserted and her family home in ruins. The woman she had hoped to reunite with has passed away, leaving Mrs. Watts to survey the land alone.
The film, directed by Peter Masterson and adapted by Horton Foote from his 1953 play, earned widespread critical acclaim. Geraldine Page, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Mrs. Watts, was praised for bringing a complex, crafty, and stubborn humanity to the role. Critics like Vincent Canby and Roger Ebert highlighted the performance as a career-defining turn that elevated the material.
Ultimately, the experience of returning to the derelict site provides Mrs. Watts with the closure she needs. Having confronted the reality of her history, she reconciles with her son and daughter-in-law, and the three commit to a more peaceful life together. The film remains a celebrated work, even cited by Akira Kurosawa as one of his personal favorites.
