In short: George R.R. Martin’s sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, has become one of the most anticipated books in modern history—and its delay is legendary. Described by the author as the "curse of my life," its complex construction has shaped the very narrative of a global cultural phenomenon.

The development of The Winds of Winter has been defined by architectural complexity and logistical hurdles. After releasing A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons as multi-volume sets because of their size, Martin started his sixth book by removing substantial material from his earlier draft. He initially hoped to complete it quickly enough to provide material for the television series, but the production stalled. This delay eventually forced the TV show to run out of source material after season five, leading it to forge its own narrative path. Martin has faced constant scrutiny over the timeline, making numerous predictions since 2010 that passed without publication. As of January 2026, he reported working on a manuscript with approximately 1,100 pages complete. Despite publisher suggestions in 2018 to split the novel into two books, Martin has resisted this notion, aiming for a cohesive narrative. He believes the final two volumes will exceed 1,500 pages each, though he cautioned in 2011 that even with massive progress, reaching an end can be elusive. The narrative aims to settle primary cliffhangers from A Dance with Dragons 'very early', starting specifically with two major conflicts: the battle at Meereen and the battle in the ice. While Martin has confirmed several perspective characters—including Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, and Arianne Martell—he has also noted that some previously released sample chapters have been rewritten. The novel is expected to be dark; Martin warned in 2016 that it would not be a "happy feel-good" experience, as many characters are currently in very dark places.
