In short: After a decade of studio closures, engine migrations, and creative disputes, the highly anticipated sequel to The Wolf Among Us is finally finding its footing. But the path to its 2027 release has been anything but a straight line through the Fabletown woods.

The development of The Wolf Among and 2 has been a saga of restarts and industry upheaval. Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017, the game was initially intended for a 2018 release. However, the original Telltale Games faced insurmountable challenges, leading to a majority studio closure in September 2018. While the title was later reacquired by LCG Entertainment during the studio's revival, the project underwent a total reconstruction, discarding all previous work to begin from scratch. The project's origins date back to July 2014, when Telltale considered a second season but was instead preoccupied with titles like Minecraft: Story Mode and Game of Thrones.

The production has been marked by significant technical and structural shifts. Developers transitioned from the legacy Telltale engine and Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 during 2023. This upgrade was a deliberate decision to leverage modern features and avoid developer crunch, though it contributed to significant delays. Unlike the original 2013 game, which released episodes in a standalone fashion, the new strategy involves a simultaneous release of all five episodes. The game is set six months after the first title's events and will feature the return of Adam Harrington and Erin Yvette as Bigby Wolf and Snow White.

Creative friction also reshaped the game's DNA. AdHoc Studio, which had scripted a full season, eventually pulled out of the project due to disagreements over creative control. While AdHoc handled much of the early narrative and cinematic work, Telltale later brought in Trick Studios to complete the content. As of June 2026, Zak Garriss, known for his work on Life Is Strange, was announced as the director for this upcoming 2027 adventure.
