In short: In the 2025 film Together, a couple hiking in the countryside encounters a mysterious cave that triggers a grotesque, literal fusion of their bodies. Starring real-life partners Alison Brie and Dave Franco, this supernatural horror explores the intense, sometimes visceral desire to become one with the person you love.

Directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, Together follows Millie and Tim, a couple whose relationship is strained by grief and emotional distance. After drinking from a pool in a cave, they begin to experience inexplicable physical attractions that escalate into a terrifying, involuntary merging of their limbs and bodies. The film draws thematic inspiration from ancient Greek mythology regarding the origins of human desire, specifically the tale of Hermaphroditus and the fountain of Salmacis, which tells of two figures becoming a single, androgynous entity.

The production utilized a mix of practical prosthetics and digital effects to achieve its unsettling visuals. To create the final merged version of the characters, nicknamed Tillie, the team used motion capture and digital compositing to blend the features of Brie and Franco. The film’s score, composed by Cornel Wilczek, mirrors this transformation by distorting a romantic melody to reflect the couple's physical convergence. Despite its gruesome premise, critics have noted the film's surprising emotional core, with many attributing the performances' authenticity to the fact that the leads are married in real life.

The film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Neon for $17 million. While it received generally positive reviews for its unique blend of horror and romance, it also faced controversy. In China, authorities digitally altered the film to change a same-sex couple into a heterosexual one, a move that drew significant backlash from local viewers. Additionally, the production is currently involved in a copyright lawsuit filed by Patrick Henry Phelan, who alleges the film infringes on his 2023 project, Better Half. Shanks has denied these claims, citing his own earlier development timeline.
