In short: Alonzo Thompson Lincoln didn't just commit crimes; he curated a terrifying physical identity. From a bullied youth in Harlem to a mutagenic powerhouse, his transformation into the supervillain Tombstone is a study in how personal trauma and chemical accidents can forge a literal living nightmare.

Created by Gerry Conway and Alex Saviuk in March 1988, Tombstone was designed to be a visual and narrative antithesis to the hero. Conway specifically wanted to move away from central figures like Aunt May or Mary Jane to focus on 'second- or even third-tier' characters. He sought to capture the ruthless gangster energy of Hammerhead without using the character himself, leading to the creation of Lonnie Lincoln—a hulking albino man with squared-off features intended to evoke the jagged silhouette of an actual tombstone.

Lincoln's backstory is rooted in systemic bullying; as the only African-American albino in his Harlem neighborhood, he began extorting classmates for protection. His criminal trajectory was cemented when he intimidated a reporter, Joseph 'Robbie' Robertson, into suppressing a story about his activities. For over 20 years, Lincoln operated in the shadows, eventually becoming a notorious hitman who filed his teeth and nails into points to mimic a vampire's appearance, a tactic used to catch opponents off-guard.

The character's evolution from a peak-human street fighter to a superhuman threat occurred through a series of violent encounters with Robertson. After being trapped in an airtight chamber at an Oscorp chemical plant, Lincoln was exposed to an experimental gas. This mutagenic reaction granted him a superhuman constitution, allowing his body to withstand high-caliber bullets, extreme temperatures, and toxic vapors. Despite his evolution into a New York crime lord, his narrative remains inextricably tied to his original sin: the decades-old murder of a source that Robertson kept secret until Lincoln's eventual arrest.
