In short: Toy Story 2 was nearly lost forever when a rogue command deleted 90% of the film's assets. With backups failing and a rigid theatrical release date looming, the team had to rebuild the entire movie from scratch in just nine months, pushing the staff to the brink of physical exhaustion.

Initially conceived as a direct-to-video sequel, Toy Story 2 faced a turbulent production. Pixar staff were largely occupied with A Bug's Life, leaving the sequel to be developed in a separate building. When Disney executives viewed early story reels, they were so impressed that they demanded a theatrical release. However, Pixar's leadership felt the quality was insufficient, leading John Lasseter to host a weekend 'story summit' to completely overhaul the plot.

The production faced a near-fatal blow in 1998 when an animator accidentally triggered a deletion command on the internal servers. Because backups had been malfunctioning for a month, the project was only saved by technical director Galyn Susman, who had been working from home and possessed a copy of the assets on her personal computer. This recovery allowed the team to proceed, though the compressed nine-month schedule took a severe toll on the crew. By the time the film was completed, about one-third of the staff suffered from repetitive strain injuries.

Despite these internal struggles, the film premiered on November 13, 1999, to widespread critical acclaim. It grossed $511 million against a $90 million budget, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 1999. Critics frequently cite it as a rare example of a sequel that surpasses its predecessor. The film's legacy was further cemented in 2009 when it was converted to 3D through a process Lasseter dubbed 'digital archaeology,' which involved revisiting original computer data to create stereoscopic views for a limited theatrical re-release.
