Can a boyband's lost harmony save a kidnapped brother from a diamond perfume bottle?
In short: In the third installment of the Trolls franchise, Branch discovers his past as a member of the boyband BroZone. When his brother Floyd is captured by pop-star wannabes who extract his essence to fuel their own fame, Branch must reunite his estranged siblings to master the elusive Perfect Family Harmony.
Released in 2023, Trolls Band Together serves as the third entry in the DreamWorks Animation series. The narrative centers on Branch, voiced by Justin Timberlake, who learns that his long-lost brothers were once part of a boyband called BroZone. The group disbanded after failing to achieve the Perfect Family Harmony—a powerful, synchronized ability that is the only force capable of shattering diamond. This becomes critical when two Mount Rageon teenagers, Velvet and Veneer, trap Floyd in a diamond perfume bottle to siphon his essence for their own singing careers.
The production process for the film was extensive, with development officially confirmed in November 2021. While the film is primarily CGI, it incorporates 2D animation sequences inspired by the visual styles of the 1968 classic Yellow Submarine and the 1940 film Fantasia. The score was composed by Theodore Shapiro, and the film notably featured the reunion of NSYNC for the original song Better Place, marking the group's first new track in 22 years. Marketing efforts were equally broad, involving partnerships with brands ranging from Shake Shack to Puma.
Critical reception was mixed to positive, with the film holding a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some reviewers noted signs of franchise fatigue, others praised the screenplay's humor and the film's vivid animation. Commercially, the movie grossed approximately $210 million worldwide. Following its theatrical run, the film transitioned through various release windows, including VOD, Blu-ray, and streaming services like Peacock and Netflix, reflecting the evolving distribution strategies for modern animated features.
The film's themes of reconciliation and family dynamics are central to the plot, as the brothers must overcome their past arguments and Branch's resentment over being left alone after their grandmother was eaten. By the conclusion, the brothers succeed in performing the harmony, rescuing Floyd, and finding closure, while the antagonists face justice for their machinations. The project also saw success beyond the screen, winning top soundtrack honors at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.
