The expansion that redefined gaming with a record-breaking launch
In short: In November 2008, a digital phenomenon arrived to conquer the gaming world. Selling 2.8 million copies on its first day, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King became the fastest-selling computer game of its time, introducing a frozen continent and a terrifying new class of fallen heroes.
Released on November 13, 2008, the expansion shifted the focus to the crescent-shaped continent of Northrend. This new landmass, roughly half the size of the Eastern Kingdoms, served as the primary battleground against the Lich King, Arthas Menethil. To navigate this frozen expanse, players had to reach level 68, with the expansion raising the overall level cap from 70 to 80.
The expansion introduced the first 'hero class,' the Death Knight. Starting at level 55, these fallen champions of the Alliance and Horde utilized a unique combat system driven by runes and runic power rather than traditional mana or energy. Death Knights could specialize in blood, frost, or unholy magic, allowing them to act as tanks or damage dealers through distinct mechanical 'presences.'
The narrative was defined by large-scale conflicts and shifting loyalties. While the Alliance, led by King Varian Wrynn, sought vengeance for Lordaeron, the Horde, under Warchief Thrall, launched expeditions to counter the undead Scourge. These tensions were exacerbated by the Royal Apothecary Society's use of a devastating plague at the Wrathgate, an event that turned King Varian hostile toward the Horde for the remainder of the campaign.
Beyond the war against the undead, the expansion explored ancient mysteries. Players encountered the Old God Yogg-Saron within the titan complex of Ulduar and faced the madness of Malygos, the Aspect of the Blue Dragonflight. These layered conflicts transformed Northrend into a complex theater of war involving dragons, giants, and ancient gods.
