Can extreme personality opposites actually find lasting romantic success?
In short: Miyu Suzuki is an energetic extrovert who follows the crowd, while Yusuke Tani is a blunt, introverted loner. Their relationship explores the 'opposites attract' paradigm, a dynamic that has resonated with readers and viewers alike, driving the series to over 2.1 million copies in circulation.
Created by Kōcha Agasawa, the manga series 'You and I Are Polar Opposites' (Seihantai na Kimi to Boku) began as a one-shot on January 7, 2021. It transitioned into a serialized run on Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app from May 2, 2022, to November 25, 2024. The narrative centers on the developing relationship between Suzuki, an outgoing high school girl, and Tani, a quiet student who sits next to her. The plot focuses on how Suzuki's tendency to follow others contrasts with Tani's blunt honesty. This connection forms the foundation of their growing bond.
The story's popularity is reflected in its significant industry recognition and sales. It has earned numerous accolades, including ranking second in the 2022 Next Manga Awards' Web Manga category and ranking third in the 16th Manga Taishō. Its success spans multiple formats, including a novel by Shunto Saiba titled 'Sunny & Rainy' and an anime television series produced by Lapin Track. The series was also highly ranked by Da Vinci magazine's Book of the Year list. Furthermore, it received recognition from the National Bookstore Employees Recommended Comics list.
Directed by Takayoshi Nagatomo, the anime's initial season ran from 11 January until 29 March 2026, before its concluding second season broadcast between 5 July and 4 October that year. Critics, such as Louis Kemner of Comic Book Resources, have noted the series' effective use of the 'opposites attract' romantic paradigm, drawing comparisons to the chemistry found in 'My Dress-Up Darling'. The production featured music by Tofubeats and character designs by Mako Miyako. Additionally, the series was broadcast on the Nichi-5 programming block.
