In short: In the world of Kōsuke Fujishima, Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa patrol the streets of Sumida. While their adventures in the Bokuto Police Station captivated fans for years, the actual location of their precinct is a fiction, replaced in the real world by a hospital.

Originally serialized between 1986 and 1992 in Kodansha's Morning Party Zōkan and Morning magazines, You're Under Arrest follows the lives of two female officers, Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa. Stationed at the fictional Bokuto Police Station in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, the episodic series focuses on the duo as they navigate everyday crime and interact with a humorous cast of supporting characters. The narrative primarily unfolds within the Greater Tokyo Area. This episodic format highlights the dynamic between the protagonists and their comedic side characters.

The franchise's reach extends far beyond the original manga, which was collected into seven tankōbon volumes. Studio Deen has animated several adaptations, including three television seasons and three OVA series. The series also expanded into a 90-minute film released on April 24, 1999, and a visual novel for the PlayStation released on March 29, 2001, which introduced new characters like detective Ryosuke Arisugawa. The animated adaptations were produced by Studio Deen. Furthermore, a live-action drama special featuring Misaki Ito and Sachie Hara was also produced.

Despite its popularity, the franchise has faced minor continuity hurdles. For instance, the English manga published by Dark Horse Comics only included selected episodes from volumes 6 and 7, a decision reportedly made at the request of the creator, Kōsuke Fujishima. While the series has seen various revivals, such as the 2007–2008 Full Throttle series, the final frame of the last Japanese volume hints at a sequel, You're Under Arrest 2, that has yet to be serialized. A standalone novel was also published by Kodansha. Additionally, the series achieved significant popularity, ranking among the top ten anime shows in Newtype magazine in 2001.
