How a time-traveling RPG changed the mechanics of the Yo-kai Watch series
In short: Yo-kai Watch 4 broke from tradition by introducing 3D movement and direct character control. Spanning three distinct eras—the 1960s, the present, and a future 30 years ahead—the game transformed the series from a top-down perspective into a full 3D action role-playing experience.
Released in Japan in June 2019, Yo-kai Watch 4 marked a significant technical shift for Level-5. Moving away from the top-down perspective of previous entries on the Nintendo 3DS, this installment utilized 3D rendering for both exploration in Sakura New Town and its battle scenes. This transition introduced a free-roaming 3D overworld movement system more common to standard 3D RPGs.
The gameplay mechanics were overhauled to allow players to directly control their characters during combat. While players can form an active party consisting of up to one human and three Yo-kai, they can switch freely between them. During these battles, human characters manage a resource called "Yo-ki," which is absorbed and redistributed to either attack enemies or heal the party.
The narrative structure is uniquely non-linear, weaving together three separate time periods. One era features Keita "Keta" Amano and Fumika "Fumi-chan" Kodama from the original games. A different period occurs three decades later, starring Natsume Amano, Keita and Fumika's daughter. Shin Shimomachi appears in the concluding era, set in the 1960s, about 60 years before the first games.
Despite a positive reception from Famitsu, which scored the game 37/40, the title faced commercial challenges. Despite topping Japanese sales during its first week, it achieved the series' poorest performance, moving 150,721 units from June 17 to June 23, 2019. An enhanced version, Yo-kai Watch 4++, arrived in December 2019 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, marking the series' first appearance on a non-Nintendo platform.
